Mr. Becerra, 92, was born on Sept. 3, 1925 and departed this life on March 31, 2018. In his last moments, he was surrounded by those that he loved most, including his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and a host of other friends and loved ones.
Tony was raised in Rosenberg and attended Rosenberg High School. After being drafted by the United States Army in World War II, he was assigned to the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, 28th Infantry Division, and was captured by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge. He spent five months as a prisoner of war before he and three others escaped.
Upon his return to the United States, he focused on his career in Rosenberg, working as an insurance agent, barber, bail bondsman, and dancehall owner. Striving to make a difference in the community, he served as a precinct judge and consistently supported efforts to register voters. Serving on the Rosenberg City Council from 1992 to 2005, he remained a dedicated servant to the public.
Mr. Becerra’s community involvement often took a hands-on approach when it came to helping those in need. His family recalled many occasions where his desire to help others was felt within the community.
